AI in Dentistry: What Does It Mean for Your Dental Visit?

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of the conversation about modern dental care. You may have seen headlines suggesting that software can identify dental problems from X-rays. But what does that mean when you sit in the dental chair?

The most useful way to understand dental AI is as a tool that can support a dentist’s assessment. It provides additional information; the dentist still needs to decide what that information means for you.

How Can AI Help with Dental Images?

Some systems analyze dental images and flag findings related to tooth decay or periodontal disease for the clinician to review. An on-screen marker can give the dentist and patient a starting point for discussing an area of concern. The ADA describes automated dental image analysis as an existing clinical decision-support application.

A highlighted area does not automatically mean you need a filling or another procedure. Your dentist considers the examination, symptoms, history, and other findings before recommending care.

Why are standards important?

One important development is the publication of ANSI/ADA Standard No. 1110-1:2025. It addresses how data from two-dimensional dental X-rays should be collected and annotated for AI image-analysis systems. The ADA also published a 2025 technical report emphasizing independent datasets for evaluating these systems.

These efforts matter because a technology’s usefulness depends on how reliably it works, how it is evaluated, and whether its limitations are understood. A standard does not guarantee that every product performs equally well.

What should patients ask?

If AI is used during your visit, consider asking:

  • What does this highlighted area show?
  • How does it relate to what you found during the examination?
  • What are my treatment options?
  • How is my imaging information protected?

Good technology should make a conversation easier to understand. You should still receive an explanation of the findings, the reasoning behind a recommendation, and the available choices.

What does this mean for your care?

AI is an evolving addition to dentistry. Human expertise and clinical judgment remain essential.[2] The practical question is how a tool contributes to a careful, individualized assessment.

Have questions about dental technology? Bring them to your next dental visit and ask how any tools used contribute to your care.
